Important official notes

  • Important Brazil caveat: this guide is for the printed 5 x 7 cm photo required for applicants under 5 or exceptional manual capture cases. Adults generally do not bring a printed photo.
  • Reliable secondary source for framing: ANAC's OACI photo guidance at https://www.gov.br/anac/foto_icao lists 70-80% face occupancy for the 5 x 7 passport format.

How to take the source photo

  • Take the source photo with even front light and no shadow behind the head.
  • Face the camera directly with eyes open, a neutral expression, and a closed mouth.
  • Frame head and shoulders so the face can be cropped to the verified head-size range.
  • If glasses are allowed, lenses must be clear, untinted, and glare-free.
  • Keep the face fully uncovered; no cap, accessory, adornment, hair, or shadow should partly cover it.

Common rejection reasons

  • Bringing a printed photo for an adult appointment when Polícia Federal will capture the photo on site.
  • Smiling, frowning, closing eyes, or opening the mouth.
  • Hair covering the eyes or face outline.
  • Necklaces, chains, or shiny jewelry covering the neck/face or reflecting light.
  • Shadows on the face or behind the head.
  • Heavy filters, beauty effects, or retouching.
  • Glasses with glare, tint, thick frames, or lenses covering the eyes.
  • Face partly covered by a cap, accessory, adornment, hair, or shadow.
